WHAT COVID-19 IS TEACHING US

Where we live has become a summer paradise and a winter retreat: these are the new roles of our homes during the age of lockdown and isolation. As we are nearing the end of summer and reflect on the past season, one cannot help but think of what an incredible year it has been thus far. Barely out of winter, we faced the global lockdown threat of Covid-19, which is still ongoing and touching everyone’s lives daily.

For what was supposed to be a carefree season with traveling to other global destinations became a stay-at-home for all of us. This led to global perceptions changing regarding what it means to be in- and outside one’s home for a prolonged period of time. As you all saw, we focused our campaigns on trends of re-arranging and re-evaluating the purpose of every space available in our homes. 

Kitchens became makeshift diners and our own restaurants substituting for that night out, studies became home offices, garages were converted to gyms and for those lucky enough to have outdoor space, those became the unexplored frontier and great outdoors. More than ever the home gained immense appreciation for what it offers: every room had at least a dual purpose or got re-invented with a renewed inner lifestyle focus.

With residential sales, we saw a bigger demand for terraces, balconies, back yards, roof terraces, gardens and courtyards. This just shows how important the home has become a sanctuary, a place to relax, renew, recharge and even convalesce. With most people having been forced to renew their vision of the home, we cannot but feel that this change of heart, brought on by the global pandemic primarily, will be around for a while longer than we had ever hoped for. 

So it’s nearly time to get out the winter woollies, raincoats and umbrellas, the cocoa and warm blankets. Winter is the perfect time to curl up on the couch with a good book or binge-watch Netflix series with the family during the cold and stormy days ahead. This will again underscore the importance of home being our cocoon of warmth and safety.
